I have been teased that the birth center only exists as a display area for the quilts. The truth is that there have only been two quilts specifically made with mothers and babies in mind.
One is the quilt I made in midwifery school that is a remembrance of my own losses.
The other is the gold threaded quilt which hangs above the bed in the birth room. Pete Seeger wrote a song "Had I a Golden Thread." One of the first lines is "Had I a golden thread for the bravery of women giving birth."
That quilt was made when I dreamed of having my own birth center more than 12 years ago. I would like to think that it is a fitting tribute to the women we have served.
